The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo Association made an appeal this Thursday to “resist fighting” the future Government of the far-right Javier Milei and have defended the role of public media. Three days after the first anniversary of the death of Hebe de Bonafini, one of its co-founders and historical references, the organization has held, together with journalists and Human Rights activists, a new march in which they have remembered the legacy of their companion, reports the Télam news agency.
“It is true that you have to resist, but you have to resist by fighting. You have to fight all the time. We cannot remain silent, nor still, nor sitting, nor bitter, nor crying.“, said Carmen Arias, a member of the group, in reference to a speech by Bonafini given in October 2017 after the victory of Mauricio Macri’s party.
Arias, who also recalled that the founder expressed that “resistance and combat are the rights of the people” that is not going to “give up”, has stated that the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo keep Bonafini in mind, since he “continues to be” their “beacon.”
The manager of Journalism and Digital Content at Télam and former director of Tiempo Argentino, Gustavo Cirelli, has stated that since the triumph at the polls of the libertarians “an uncertain stage is coming” but, he said, that for “that uncertainty we have the certainty of our convictions to face the impossible.”
Regarding the statements of leaders of La Libertad Avanza (LLA) on his intention to “close” or “privatize” public mediaCirelli has stressed that “a stigmatization campaign has been going on for a long time” against this type of media and “its workers.” Furthermore, he has criticized that “there is a euphemism going around that privatization is” and considered that this measure is a “plan to silence public media.”
