The head of Political Affairs of United NationsRosemary DiCarlo, concluded this Wednesday a visit to Israel, the occupied Palestinian territories and Jordan after which she expressed “deep concern at the continued loss of life in Loop since the horrible attacks of October 7.”
DiCarlo applauded the recent announcement of a truce to facilitate the release of hostages and a humanitarian pause “But he said much more must be done,” according to a statement, which details that the diplomat has been meeting with political leaders and UN staff in the conflict zone in the Middle East.
The trip began on November 19, when DiCarlo traveled to Jerusalem and Tel Aviv to meet with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and other senior government officials, as well as with families of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas hostages taken on November 7. October.
On October 21, the diplomat was in Ramallah and met with the Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority, Mohammad Shtayyeh, other Palestinian leaders and officials of the Palestinian Red Crescent; and on November 22 she had several meetings in Amman, about which there are no details.
“The war in Gaza and the October 7 attacks that triggered it were at the center of their conversations”indicates the note, which adds that DiCarlo listened to his interlocutors’ ideas about ending the conflict and advocated a two-state solution.
DiCarlo reiterated to all parties the priorities of Secretary General António Guterres: achieving a humanitarian ceasefire and improving humanitarian access to the Strip; the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, and avoid escalation or expansion of the conflict.
He also spent time with UN staff who have been helping civilians in Gaza and paid tribute to the dozens of workers who have died during the conflict.
