The French president, Emmanuel Macronrejected the “double standards” in the treatment of victims of different conflicts during his speech at the G20 summit, after his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putinaffirmed that the West does not treat equally those affected in the war between Israel and Hamas.
“The president has reaffirmed that France rejects the idea of double standards and universally defends the principle of human dignity, the sovereignty of peoples and respect for humanitarian law,” the Elysée indicated in a statement.
Macron condemned Hamas attacks and “recalled the need for all countries to condemn them without any ambiguity”while demanding “the immediate release of the hostages”, added the French Presidency.
“He recalled that in all places, human lives matter, that civilians must be protected and that humanitarian law must be respected”he noted, while appealing for a humanitarian truce that leads to a ceasefire.
Putin, who participated in the G20 summit for the first time since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, accused the West of being unimpressed by “the extermination of the civilian population in Palestine” or those caused by kyiv in el “bloody blow” 2014 in Donbas.
Precisely the invasion of Ukraine prevented a common text from being agreed upon, as at the last summit.
Macron reiterated in his speech “its full support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.”
The French president also considered it imperative “raise the ambition to reduce emissions and plan the end of fossil fuels”, placing the abandonment of coal as a priority, which must be accelerated during COP28. Better control of artificial intelligence on an international scale was another of the requests launched by the French president.
