With 92% counted, Milei is elected president of Argentina with 55.8% of votes

The candidate of La Libertad Avanza (far-right), Javier Milei, will be the president of Argentina starting next December 10, having obtained 55.8% of the votes, with 91.8% of the tables counted, thus defeating the ruling party Sergio Massawho added 44.1% of the votes.

Although in Argentina official data can only be released after 9:00 p.m. (00:00 GMT), the collection of representative data ahead of schedule led the Secretary General of the Presidency, Julio Vitobello, to speak with the authorities of the National Electoral Chamber and alter the protocol that was planned.

The data was transmitted shortly before 8:30 p.m. (23:30 GMT), after Massa acknowledged defeat: “Today a stage in my political life ends”stated the Peronist politician, who, as Minister of Economy, will now have to face the management of the most delicate piece of the transition with the new Government.

According to what has been counted so far, 13,471,456 voters supported Milei, while 10,644,709 supported the Minister of Economy.

Some 35.8 million Argentines were called to elect president and vice president in the second runoff in history, after the one held in 2015, when the center-right Mauricio Macri won victory over the Peronist Daniel Scioli for his 2015-2019 Government.

Furthermore, in 2003, the Peronists Carlos Menem and Néstor Kirchner had to compete in a second round, since neither of them obtained enough percentage to win in the first round – a Four. Five% or a minimum of 40% and 10 percentage points over the next most voted leader.

However, Menem, who had been president between 1989 and 1999, retired. This made the governor of Santa Cruz until then assume the leadership of the Argentine State for the period 2003-2007.

This Sunday’s election day registered a 76.3% participation, the second lowest in history after the 76.2% 2007, when the Peronist Cristina Fernández won, thus beginning the first of her two terms (2007-2011 and 2011-2015).
