UN will not participate in the unilateral creation of “safe zones” in Gaza

The leaders who make up the United Nations and associated NGOs announced they will not participate in the establishment of any “safe zone” in the Gaza Strip if it is not agreed upon by all parties in conflict. This is in reference to what is happening between Israel and Hamas.

“If basic conditions are not put in place to guarantee security and other fundamental needs, or a mechanism that supervises them,” they indicated in a statement signed by organizations with headquarters in Geneva, New York and Rome.

Another point that they emphasized a lot is that “in the current circumstances, the proposals to unilaterally create ‘safe zones’ in Loop “could cause harm to civilians, including large-scale loss of life, and must be rejected.”

“Without the right conditions, concentrating civilians in such areas at a time of hostilities can increase the risk of attack and damage. No safe zone will truly be so when it is declared unilaterally or is implemented with the presence of armed forces,” they highlighted.
