starlinka unit of the American company SpaceX, led by the billionaire Elon Muskwon a contract with Mexican state power company CFE for up to 1,556 million Mexican pesos (about US$89.49 million) to offer free internet in the country until 2026, an official said Wednesday.
The contract is in addition to another obtained by the SpaceX unit with CFE to provide cell phone service for up to 1,775 million pesos, also valid until December 2026, as reported by Reuters at the beginning of the month.
“The specific contract with this company was an open public tender. The company won by being a direct supplier, not an intermediary, it won by the price it gave“, the coordinator of the National Digital Strategy of the Presidency of Mexico, Carlos Calderón, told journalists.
