The scene is unbearable: dozens, hundreds, of Gazans elbowing each other to get something to put in their mouths. Whatever it is, whatever they catch, food that is often already in bad condition. Gaza is starvingor rather, they are killing heraccording to NGOs, from UNRWA to World Vision, including Oxfam Intermón.
Franc Cortada, general director of the latter organization, has made time to speak with laSexta. He confesses to being “extremely worried” and gives us the keys: “Two million people don’t know if they will eat tomorrow and the symptoms of malnutrition and dehydration are already more than evident, especially in the little ones.
He says that in the Strip there is almost nothing anymore: everything, the most basic, is missing. “Essential foodss such as rice, legumes or oil are being sold out throughout the market. Others such as flour, eggs or dairy products have missing completely off the shelves of Gaza,” he explains.
A scarcity like never before for a people, the Palestinians, who since the Israeli occupation more than half a century ago have always depended largely on international aid. “Since this siege was imposed only 2% of food goes in that entered previously” says Cortada, providing data from the UN.
To make matters worse, that little that enters -or remains- in some warehouses cannot be distributed. “Because of the bombings and, above all, because of the pressing lack of fuel”, Explain. Again, the Israeli siege. UNWRA itself has no longer been able to distribute this Tuesday and, what is even more bloody, they have been most bakeries destroyed. “And in the few that remain, our colleagues tell us that people do queues of five, six hours, also exposed to attacks“, he tells us.
“Israel is using hunger as a weapon of war”
So solidarity organizations like Oxfam Intermón are clear: “Hunger is being used as a weapon of war against the civilian population of Gaza!” Cortada tells us categorically. Something strictly prohibited by International Humanitarian Law.
This is stated in the Geneva Conventions or United Nations resolution 24/17, which establishes that “as an occupying power, Israel is obliged to satisfy the needs of the occupied population and protect it; and any denial of humanitarian access is a clear violation“. A truth made law that seems obvious, but that international communitythe organizations denounce, is allowing shameful connivance.
