Amazon Web Services would seek to open data center in Mexico

The cloud services division of Amazon.com Inc. is reaching an agreement to open a new data center in the central Mexican state of Querétaro, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The announcement is expected soon, although a date has not been set, said one of the people, who asked not to be named because the information is not yet public. The company has been working closely with the federal government, one person said.

The agreement would be good news for Mexico, which in the first nine months of the year registered a foreign direct investment of US $ 24.8 billion, the lowest for that period since 2016 and 2% less than last year. The country has also experienced a long drought in initial public offerings on the nation’s stock exchange.

Querétaro’s Secretary of Sustainable Development, Marco Del Prete, did not confirm or deny the conversations with Amazon, but said that its status has become an attractive point for multinationals to install their data centers, with 26 of these already built, announced or under negotiation. The average investment per facility in the state is between US $ 250 million and US $ 300 million, he said.

An Amazon spokeswoman declined to comment. The company announced in September 2020 that Amazon CloudFront would launch two locations in Mexico, without providing details.

The new investment will include three facilities that will connect to the United States, said Jorge Buitrón Arriola, who represents a group of technology firms in Querétaro known as Vórtice IT. Arriola indicated that the Amazon representatives informed him of their plans, but that he cannot provide more information because the contract with government officials is being finalized.

Amazon Web Services is the leading provider of cloud computing, selling computing power and on-demand software services to businesses rather than maintaining their own in-house equipment and data centers. Its clients include a wide range of industries and governments.
