The Israeli Army has assured that its troops are already fighting for the first time inside the Palestinian city of Gaza, after a month of war against Hamas.

“For the first time in decades, the Israeli Defense Forces are fighting in the heart of Gaza city “said Yaron Finkelman, commander of the Israeli Army’s Southern Command.

Ten days ago, Israeli troops carried out the ground incursion into the Gaza Strip, after several weeks of continuous artillery attacks from Israeli soil and aerial bombardments.

The Army had managed to surround Gaza City, the main city of the Palestinian enclave, and divide the Strip in two. Now efforts are focused on the interior of the city.

“At this very moment, our soldiers are eliminating terrorists, discovering tunnelsdestroying weapons while continuing to advance towards the center of the enemy,” said Commander Finkelman, quoted in a military statement and reported by the EFE agency.

The G7 calls for a “humanitarian pause”

The foreign ministers of the G7 member countries have called for a “humanitarian pause” in the Gaza Strip to allow aid to be sent to the enclave. They have also expressed their desire that International Law be respected.

“We emphasize the need for urgent action to resolve a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza. All parties must allow unhindered humanitarian support for civilians,” the ministers, including the American Antony Blinken, have demanded.

Israel declared war on Hamas exactly a month ago after an attack by the Islamist group that left more than 1,400 dead and more than 230 hostages, while the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip has left more than 10,300 dead, almost 26,000 injured and 2,450 missing, most of them civilians.
