The Prime Minister of Portugal, Antonio Costahas resigned from his position this Tuesday in the middle of an investigation into alleged irregularities committed by his administration in the management of lithium and hydrogen mining projects in the country.
Costa announced this decision in a televised statement after meeting with the president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousaensuring that he has a clear conscience.
On Tuesday morning, prosecutors charged the Minister of Infrastructure, Joao Galamba, and Costa’s chief of staff has been arrested. The opposition has demanded that the government resign with immediate effect.
CNN Portugal already announced Costa’s resignation minutes before it took place. The head of the Portuguese Government suspended its official agenda for this Tuesday after the Prosecutor’s Office carried out searches and issued several arrest warrants.
The Public Ministry announced this Tuesday that it was investigating Costa and several members of his Cabinet for alleged crimes of prevarication, active and passive corruption, and influence peddling.
The research focuses on the lithium exploitation concessions in the Romano and Barroso mines, in the north of the country; as well as a project for a hydrogen energy production plant and another for the construction of a data center, both in Sines.
