The prestigious economic newspaper ‘Financial Times’ has published an editorial in favor of amnesty for those convicted of the process. After explaining the political situation in our country, the British newspaper states that “it is a policy of convenience” for Pedro Sánchez’s continuity in office, but “it is also is the correct one for Catalonia and for Spain“.

“The enormous political and social fissures created around the question of independence They will never be resolved solely by the actions of prosecutors and the courts. They require political dialogue and democratic debate,” adds the aforementioned newspaper.

In this sense, remember that “ERC has already abandoned unilateralism” and “would only hold an independence referendum in agreement with Madrid.” For this reason, he adds, “if the toughest Puigdemont and his Junts per Catalunya party were convinced to do the same, it would be a big step forward.”

‘Financial Times’ also praises the acting president, despite drawing his actions as pure political strategy: “Sánchez already deserves credit for having lowered the temperature of the Catalan issue“, not an easy feat in the overheated Spanish political environment,” he asserts, adding that, despite critical voices against the pardons, they “have eased tensions in Catalan society, as has the resumption of dialogue between the governments.” central and Catalan”.

“The pardon did not revalidate or reinvigorate the case, as critics predicted. Support for independence and its supporters has fallenwhile the socialist party has improved its results in Catalonia,” the newspaper recalls.

He also states that “Spain has already carried out amnesties in the past and the public interest argument in this case is convincing”, and criticizes the fierce protests against the amnesty in Spain: “The opposition’s bombast about treason does not help “relieve tensions within Catalonia or between it and the rest of Spain. It is also a political dead end for the PP that only thinks like the extreme right.”

The Spanish leader has a lot at stake with his amnesty offer. Puigdemont could breach the agreement later. It will almost certainly be challenged in court. But it is a bet that is worth it, even if it is not entirely for the right reasons,” the editorial concludes.
