UNESCO warns that attacks against journalists increase during elections

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) issued an alert due to the sharp increase in attacks against journalists and the violations of their rights during electoral periods ahead of the elections that will be held in more than 80 countries next year.

The organization indicated that between January 2019 and June 2022 it has documented 759 individual attacks against journalists during 89 elections in 70 countries around the world, and that includes five murders.

42% of these attacks were committed by the Police or by different security forces.

UNESCO notes that in numerous cases government authorities blocked the public from exercising their right to access to information during elections and public demonstrations.

This was done, for example, through internet blackouts and service disruptions, but also by censoring the media and critical voices or digitally monitoring journalists.

“All these interventions were made in the name of public order and national security”the organization warned.
