Pedro Sánchez is “emulating Argentine populist advice,” according to former president Macri

The acting president of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez“is emulating the populist advice of Argentines and surrounding areas,” said former president Mauricio Macri (2015-2019) this Wednesday.

The leader of the Together for Change coalition (center-right), the great loser in the Argentine elections of October 22, made this statement in Buenos Aires, during the celebration of the ABECEB Forum, in whose thirteenth edition he participated together with the former president of the Spanish Government Mariano Rajoy (2011-2018).

“We are in check (by populism),” said Macri, who warned that we must “act quickly and quickly” and “rebuild the institutions so that there can be debate among the leaders” and thus confront populism.

The former Argentine president indicated that the way to “resist” the lies promoted by populists is for leaders who advocate not spending, for balancing the accounts “and not giving away” to meet in forums such as Libertad y Democracia, created last March with the participation of conservative leaders from Latin America.

“We crazy people who have this vocation do not go to the government to get rich,” “we have to have the balls (sic) to say no, clearly we have to say no,” said Macri, who said that in Spain “everything is spent the reserves” and winked at Rajoy.

The politician from the Spanish Popular Party (center-right) added that the populist “never” keeps his promises, but rather “releases a few bills,” and gave as an example his son, to whom the Spanish State has given 400 euros (about $422). ) for turning 18 years old.

Rajoy described as “insane” and “absurd” that he is promised 20,000 euros when the race is over, in reference to the so-called “universal inheritance”, financial aid promoted by Sumar (left), partner of the socialist Sánchez in the Spanish Government in functions and that negotiates to form a new Executive. However, this aid is not in force.

According to Macri, the populism that, in his opinion, is exercised by the Spanish Government is what made it easier for Rajoy to join the Freedom and Democracy forum, promoted by, among others, the former Chilean president Sebastián Piñera and made up of former Latin American heads of state.

Macri and Rajoy dedicated a large part of their speech to criticizing populism, in a panel under the heading “A new era for the construction of global power” in the forum that is being held under the slogan “A new world order has awakened,” which debate this Wednesday in Buenos Aires on geopolitics, sustainability and energy transition, among other issues.

“I believe that populism was invented in Argentina,” said Macri, who added that, because of him, Latin America “is the region that has developed the least in recent decades.”

The former president of Uruguay Luis Alberto Lacalle Herrera – father of the current president, Luis Lacalle Pou – was scheduled to participate on the panel alongside Macri and Rajoy, but he is in home confinement after suffering a vascular accident on October 22.
