Belarus is threatening sanctions and deeper integration with Russia. He makes a condition
In a press release, the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it would ban the import of many goods from countries that apply sanctions against Minsk. The list of people from Western countries who will not be allowed to enter Belarus will also be expanded. The sanctions will also apply to airlines from countries and the United Kingdom. The Belarusian authorities have also announced closer integration with Russia, which was described in the press release as “one of the most important steps”.
At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that “Belarus is ready to settle all disputes through a dialogue based on mutual respect and taking into account the interests of the parties.” The regime also set a condition. As the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized in the press release, the sanctions may be lifted “if countries or groups of countries give up the logic of the Cold War era and return to constructive cooperation”.
The West has imposed sanctions on Belarus. Calls for human rights
On Thursday (2 December), the US, EU, UK and Canada imposed new sanctions on Belarus in response to “continued attacks on human rights and fundamental freedoms in Belarus, disregard of international norms and repeated acts of repression.” The countries demanded that the Lukashenka regime “immediately and completely stop organizing illegal migration across borders with the EU”. They also called on him to release almost 900 political prisoners unconditionally and without delay and to end the campaign of repression.
European Union restrictions included a ban on entry to the EU and a blockade of assets in Europe. 17 people and 11 companies appeared on the sanctions list, including the Belarusian airline Belavia and travel agencies that were involved in bringing migrants from the Middle East to Belarus.
