New car tax next year. Drivers, get your wallets ready

Drivers will have to pay tax on combustion cars. The provisions on the new fee are to enter into force next year, and over time it will become an annual obligation. The amount of the new tax will depend on one factor.

Government spokesman Piotr Müller assured in June 2022 that the government does not plan to increase registration fees for combustion cars. – We want to reduce fees and create incentives for low-emission and electric cars – he assured. But when Poland signed the so-called milestones, counting on money from the KPO, the government has just agreed to introduce combustion cars.

Tax on old cars. First a one-time fee, then an annual obligation

A one-off fee for owners of combustion cars is to be introduced by the end of 2024. Then, from 2026, the annual obligation to pay the levy will come into force. How much will the tax on an old car be? A specific rate in the so-called milestones have not been indicated, but the amount will depend on the emission standard. The more restrictive the vehicle meets, the less its owner will pay – wrote the portal.

Eurostat data shows that in Poland there are 687 cars per 1,000 inhabitants. Our country is a leader in this respect throughout the European Union. Moreover, as many as 41.3 percent cars in Poland are over 20 years old, and 37.1 percent cars are 10-20 years old. Only 5 percent are cars that are no more than two years old.

What will the tax on combustion cars be spent on?

The KPO indicates that the new fee is intended to discourage drivers from using old vehicles and encourage them to buy newer, more modern and environmentally friendly ones. In addition, the implementation of milestones is expected to include, among others: introduction of low-emission buses for urban and extra-urban transport, modernization of railway lines, construction of bypasses and liquidation of the so-called road black spots.
