Free roaming in the EU until 2032. Europeans don’t have to worry about their bill when they return from vacation

The liquidated additional charges for calling abroad will be extended by another 10 years. The European Parliament and member states reached an agreement on this matter, which has yet to be confirmed by ministers from EU countries and MEPs at the plenary session.

Roaming in the EU. Lower wholesale fees

The new regulation on the provision of lower wholesale charges -. These are the costs charged by mobile network operators for accessing their network, which allows operators from other countries and their customers to roam for. The wholesale ceilings shall be set at levels that ensure that operators are able to maintain and recover the cost of providing roaming services to consumers at domestic prices.

For data transfer, the new regulation sets the following wholesale limits:

  • 2 EUR / GB in 2022, 1.8 EUR / GB in 2023, 1.55 EUR / GB in 2024, 1.3 EUR / GB in 2025, 1.1 EUR / GB in 2026 and 1 euro / GB from 2027.
  • For voice calls: EUR 0.022 / min in the years 2022-2024 and EUR 0.019 / min from 2025.
  • For text messages: EUR 0.004 / SMS from 2022 to 2024 and EUR 0.003 / SMS from 2025.

Roaming in the EU. “For the next 10 years, Europeans won’t have to worry.”

– Since 2017, when traveling around EU countries, we have to pay for calls from mobile phones, text messages or internet in a mobile phone the same as in the country. And for the next 10 years, Europeans will not have to worry about the phone bill after returning from holidays abroad and business trips, commented Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton.

Elimination of roaming had to be carried out in the EU by regulations, because the appeals of the European Commission to mobile operators did not bring results and they did not want to voluntarily abandon additional charges. Gradually, from 2012, the prices for roaming calls were reduced, and in 2017 it was abolished.
