Mexico announced this Friday, together with Central American countries and at the proposal of Guatemala, the creation of an action group against the network of human traffickers responsible for the accident in Chiapas in which 50 migrants died on Thursday.
“The countries of the region, at the proposal of Guatemala, announce the creation of the Immediate Action Group against the network of human traffickers responsible for the tragedy in Chiapas, to investigate, identify, apprehend and bring to justice the members and commanders of the transnational criminal organization responsible for this human tragedy ”, said the Foreign Minister of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, at a press conference.
The Secretary of Foreign Relations explained that with this mechanism, which so far has the backing of the Governments of Guatemala, Ecuador, the United States, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, they jointly commit to apply the law against persons responsible for the deaths.

In addition, he said, they will work in a coordinated manner to combat human trafficking in all its manifestations.
He also clarified that from now on each country will undertake the investigation in its territory and, in addition to the existing tools of legal cooperation, a mechanism will be established for the exchange of information “directly and fluidly” in order to give results “to the bereaved and to public opinion in general ”.
“The countries of the region reiterate our support for safe, orderly and regular migration, and we reiterate our rejection of action against international criminal networks for trafficking in persons. We will not allow impunity ”, declared Ebrard.
At the press conference, his namesake from Guatemala, Pedro Brolo, agreed with Ebrard on the need to address the causes of migration.
“To fight against illegal migration, it is essential that we join forces to build walls of prosperity so that conditions are created for people to develop in their communities and not feel motivated to risk their lives,” he stated on his behalf and on behalf of the President of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei.

Most of the injured migrants traveling in the trailer were Guatemalans (95), although three people from the Dominican Republic were also counted, a Honduran, an Ecuadorian and a Mexican.
This Friday, the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, attributed the accident to the fact that “the causes of migration have not been addressed” as he has requested from the United States and the United Nations.
The region is experiencing an unprecedented migration crisis.
Mexican authorities intercepted 228,115 migrants and deported 82,627 from January to October 2021, numbers not seen in more than 15 years.
