Louisiana Republican Congressman Michael Johnson has been named president of the House of Representatives of the United States after managing to unite the Republican Party around his figure, thus undoing the institutional blockade in which the Capitol had been mired since the beginning of October after the dismissal of the previous president of the Lower House, Kevin McCarthy.

Johnson, recognized ally of former President Donald Trumphas managed to get the ‘hard wing’ of the party – from the extreme right and recognized ‘Trumpists’ – to have supported him in an election in which he has achieved 220 votes compared to 209 for the Democratic candidateHakeem Jeffries, picks up the American network ‘CNN’.

Despite having a majority in the House, the Republican Party has seen how the appointment of the president – the third authority in the North American country – was blocked on numerous occasions when its congressmen considered that the candidates would not sufficiently oppose the progressive policies of the Joe Biden Administration.

This hard Republican bloc was responsible for the no-confidence motion that ousted McCarthy of the Presidency of the Chamber at the beginning of the month, and also that the iOhio Rep. Jim Jordan’s attempts were thwarted on up to three occasions.

The Republican Party held an internal vote on Tuesday, a kind of primary election, to name its candidate. Although the most voted option was the party’s ‘number two’ in the House of Representatives, Tom Emmerthis resigned from the candidacy hours later in view of the fact that she would be frustrated by her own party colleagues.

After Emmer’s resignation, the Republican Party held a second vote in which Johnson won, who already this Wednesday received approval from Trump. The former president, in turn, has launched a message on his social networks in which he has supported him and has urged Republicans to support his inauguration.
