The acting Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, has requested that aid to Gaza can arrive “constantly”“and has claimed a humanitarian ceasefire in the Middle East. “This is the moment for a ceasefire,” said Albares upon his arrival at the meeting of the foreign ministers of the European Union (EU). celebrate this Monday in Luxembourg.
This request for a ceasefire has been requested by the acting President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, at the Peace Summit that was held this Saturday in Egypt. Albares will convey the message to the rest of the European ministers. “Europe needs to speak clearly about Israel’s right to repel Hamas terrorist attacks, but it also needs to speak clearly in the protection of the Palestinian civilian population“said the minister.
It is a matter, however, on which the European Union has not found the necessary unanimity in foreign policy. “We Europeans have to speak with a single voice looking towards the future. (…) We want it to be a future of peace in the Middle East and that peace only requires the existence of a Palestinian State that lives in good neighborhood with a state of Israel,” Albares added.
The minister has also called on Hamas to release all the captured hostages since last October 7 and “prevent” the “spiral of violence” from spreading to Lebanon and Jordan. In this sense, Albares has stated that he is speaking with the Israeli authorities and with the Arab countries to try to get Hamas to release the Spaniard Iván Illarramendi.
