Pope Francis, saddened by the death of migrants in an accident in Chiapas, Mexico

Two Ecuadorians were also injured in this accident.

Pope Francis was “deeply saddened” upon hearing the “painful news” of the traffic accident involving a truck in which 55 migrants lost their lives in the Mexican state of Chiapas.

The pope sent a telegram to the archbishop of Tuxtla, Fabio Martínez Castilla, in which he offered “votes for the eternal rest of the deceased.”

Francisco also expressed “his deep condolences to the families of the victims together with his heartfelt expressions of closeness and consolation, of lively solicitude and desire for the prompt recovery of the injured.”

“In these moments of pain, he cordially imparts the comforting Apostolic Blessing to them,” the telegram added.

Two Ecuadorians injured in an accident in Chiapas – Mexico

The accident happened when a trailer carrying more than a hundred Central American migrants, in overcrowded conditions, overturned on a curve, due to speeding, on the Chiapa de Corzo-Tuxtla Gutiérrez highway.

The national coordinator of Civil Protection, Laura Velázquez Alzúa, who went to the scene of the events, pointed out that so far 152 migrants have been counted, of them 55 deceased, 73 injured and 24 unharmed. (I)
