Taylor Swift conquers the North American box office with “The Eras Tour”

After selling out her large stadium tour, the pop superstar Taylor Swift filled movie theaters with fans: his concert film grossed some $96 million in its opening weekend in North Americawhich broke records in the category.

“It is a sensational national premiere,” said analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research.

The sale of tickets for “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour”, which includes scenes from three concerts, were however below some estimates for the period between Friday and Sunday.

However, they remained “giant figures” that overshadowed other concert films, Gross said.

Until now, he said, the highest-grossing concert films had been “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” (2011), which ended with total revenues of US$ 73 million dollars, and “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” (2009)with US$ 72.1 million.

Swift surpassed those titles in three days, and made this weekend the highest grossing since the simultaneous releases this summer of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer”.

The film, produced with unusual speed, was released with some special Swiftian touches.

The AMC theaters, which distributed it, broke with standard practice and encouraged moviegoers to dance, sing, take out their cell phones and generally act as if they were at a real concert, achieving what one critic called a “delirious and dizzying celebration of Swift-mania.”

Far behind, in second place of the weekend, was the terrifying sequel from Blumhouse and Universal “The Exorcist: Believers”from Blumhouse and Universal, with an estimated gross of US$11 million, according to the specialized site Exhibitor Relations.

Leslie Odom Jr. and Ann Dowd star in this horror film, 50 years after the 1973 original.

In third place was the animated film “Paw Patrol”, from Paramount, with US$ 7 million. Taraji P. Henson, Chris Rock, Serena Williams and McKenna Grace voice the Paw Patrol pups.

Fourth place went to the bloody “Saw X”from Lionsgate, with US$5.7 million at the box office, and in fifth place was 20th Century’s science fiction film “The Creator”, with US$4.3 million.

The next five of the 10 most viewed were:

6.- “Mystery in Venice” (2.1 million dollars)

7.- “The Blind” (2 million dollars)

8.- “The Nun 2” ($1.6 million)

9.- “The Equalizer 3″ ($960,000)

10.- “Dumb Money” ($920,000)
