President Gabriel Boric criticized FIFA’s decision to exclude Chile from hosting a 2030 World Cup match and announced that his government will “to worth” the rights of the country. “You don’t play with the name of Chile”, he assured.
FIFA announced on Wednesday that Spain, Portugal and Morocco will host the next 2030 World Cup and that Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay will host an opening match of the championship.
With this, Chile was left out, which had registered a joint application with the other three South American countries.
“I regret that there are institutions that operate in an unserious and surprising manner and, of course, we are going to assert all the rights that correspond to Chile, because national integrity and the name of Chile cannot be played with.“, said the Chilean president on Wednesday night, raising the tone of the unrest that resonates in the South American country.
Boric said that he spoke about this issue with the president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, and with that of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, who assured him that they found out about FIFA’s decision when it was made public.
The Chilean president also ruled out any responsibility of his government in this decision.
“It is not a decision in which the government has committed any type of negligence, it is FIFA’s own decision (…). We comply with absolutely everything that corresponds“said Boric.
Chile was the headquarters of the ‘Together 2030 Corporation’, established to raise the joint candidacy of Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay for the 2030 World Cup. In addition, the general management of that entity was in the hands of a Chilean.
