Ukraine in the EU. Charles Michel gave a possible date and supported quick accession. However, there are conditions

The head of the European Council supports Ukraine’s quick accession provided that Kiev meets certain criteria.

– Ukraine can become a member of the European Union by 2030 if both sides do their homework, assured the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, on Tuesday (October 3) in an interview with “Spiegel”. Michel called on the EU to speed up its “decision-making processes”. In his opinion, Ukraine’s quick accession would prove that the EU “is capable of geopolitical actions.”

Ukraine in the EU: accession without reduced tariffs

– Ukraine and other candidate countries must implement reforms, fight corruption and meet legal requirements, Michel emphasized.

However, he stressed that the EU could not continue to “waste time”. The influence of Russia and China, for example in the Western Balkans, is becoming greater. In addition to Ukraine, other candidates for EU membership are Turkey, six Western Balkan countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Serbia) and the Republic of Moldova.

On Friday (October 6), EU heads of state and government will meet in Granada, Spain, to discuss the start of talks on Ukraine’s accession. Ukraine expects it to take place by the end of this year. The European Commission intends to issue a recommendation on this matter at the beginning of November at the latest.

A decision on this matter is to be made during the summit in Brussels, which will be held in mid-December. It requires unanimity of all 27 EU countries.
