Barbie doll will center an exhibition in London in July 2024

The Design Museum of London announced this Tuesday that it will open an exhibition on July 5, 2024 on the history and evolution of the famous doll Barbie.

In a statement, the museum indicated today that, in collaboration with the manufacturer Mattel Inc., it has invested three years in preparing the exhibition and that its presentation to the public will coincide with the 65th anniversary of the Barbie brand next year.

The evolution that has been traced over time by the design of what has become one of the most famous dolls in the world will be explored, in vogue again thanks to the film released this year directed by the American Greta Gerwig and starring the Australian Margot Robbie.

The Design Museum has been able to access Mattel’s extensive archives in California (United States) on Barbie as well as dozens of objects “rare and unique” which will be exhibited to the public in London along with other loans and acquisitions in order to tell the story of the iconic brand over the last six and a half decades, the note explains.

The museum’s curator, Danielle Thom, has been in charge of shaping this project, which will transport the viewer to 1959, when the legacy of the famous blonde doll began to take shape.

The evolution of Barbie will explore multiple facets linked to her history, such as fashion, architecture, furniture and the design of her vehicles.

“Barbie is one of the most recognizable brands on the planet and as we have seen recently, its history evolves with each new generation”recalled Tim Marlow, director and CEO of the Design Museum, in the statement.

The manager said that he is “wishing” expose “a whole range of eye-catching objects, some familiar but many others never seen before, to showcase the evolution of design through the decades of the world of Barbie.”

The museum also anticipated that “soon” will reveal more details about this exhibition and will put tickets on sale next spring.
