ford and General Motors About 500 more workers were temporarily removed from their duties due to collateral effects of the strike ongoing in the three majors car manufacturers of the country, the two companies reported.
The two companies sent home employees who were left unable to work due to the stoppage of activities decided by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union more than 15 days ago at several assembly plants over wage demands, Ford reported Monday night. and GM.
The UAW launched a strike on September 15 at GM, Ford and Stellantis plants, the “big three” of Detroit, with a handful of plants paralyzed, although the majority of the organization’s 146,000 union members continue their work.
On Friday, the UAW extended the move for a second time, ordering additional work stoppages at GM and Ford plants but sidelining Stellantis due to progress in talks.
GM claimed that the UAW strike in Wentzville, Missouri, and Lansing, Michigan, “continues to have negative ripple effects.”
The company is sending home 130 workers in Parma, Ohio, and 34 in Marion, Indiana, which “they have no work to do”a spokesperson for the firm said in an email.
Ford, for its part, asked 330 employees in Chicago, Illinois and Lima, Ohio, not to report to work.
“Our production system is highly interconnected” and that explains why some plants are indirectly affected by the strike, Ford explained in a statement on Monday.
The three companies had temporarily laid off about 3,000 workers who cannot perform tasks due to the strike. The total now stands at 3,500 people.
The strike movement exceeds 25,000 workers called by the UAW.
