Salsa icon Paquito Guzmán dies at 82

Puerto Rican singer Paquito Guzmán, one of the greatest exponents of romantic salsa in the world and with great success in South America, died this Thursday at the age of 82 after a long battle against cancer.

Frank Guzmán Geigel, known in the music industry as Paquito Guzmán, died at his home in the Puerto Rican municipality of Toa Baja surrounded by his wife and children, according to the interpreter’s family.

“There have been many samples and calls that we have received, so we ask for space to process this sad moment. We ask for a little time to assimilate this hard loss, “said one of her granddaughters, a family spokeswoman.

The spokeswoman thanked the support “from Puerto Rico and all the fans of the world” and reported that, respecting the artist’s last wish, no funeral acts will be held.

Born on November 20, 1939 in San Juan, the singer published more than twenty records throughout his career, including “Champagne and rum: the best salsa ballads” (1986) and “Tu Amante Romántico ”(1988).

Paquito Guzmán began his musical career in the early sixties and for decades he cultivated successes in various genres such as bolero, guajira, guaracha and salsa.

He was part of the Trío Los Primos by Rafael Scharrón and Tatín Vale and the Conjunto Cachana by Joe Quijano, but he consolidated his career in music when he joined the Orquesta La Primerísima de Tommy Olivencia.

The interpreter also developed as a soloist, managing to transcend the borders of the United States and Puerto Rico and achieving great popularity throughout South America, especially in Venezuela, Colombia and Peru.
