The US warns migrants that it will continue to monitor the border even if the Government closes

USA this Friday he warned the migrants that the border patrol will continue to monitor irregular crossings despite the government shutdown scheduled for this weekend due to the depletion of the federal budget.

“The personnel of our Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP) will continue their mission protecting our border and ports of entry, prioritizing our national security.”Blas Núñez Neto, Undersecretary of Border Policy of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS, in English), explained in a press conference.

The official noted that “The border is not open nor would it be open to irregular immigration” regardless of the foreseeable closure of the Administration due to the lack of agreement between Democrats and Republicans.

Núñez Neto recalled that Joe Biden’s Government has aggravated the consequences for the crossings of undocumented migrants since Title 42, the expulsion policy that was applied during the covid-19 pandemic, was lifted in May.

Since then, Venezuelan, Cuban, Nicaraguan and Haitian migrants have been returned to Mexico, while the rest are returned to their countries and face a possible five-year ban from re-entering the United States.

Since May 12, more than 253,000 people have been deported to 152 countries, Núñez Neto said.

The official urged people who want to arrive in the United States to do so regularly by making an appointment online to request a humanitarian permit instead of crossing the border.

Despite the new immigration policies, the pressure on the border does not decrease, since US authorities detained 232,972 people in August, the highest monthly number so far this year.

According to some media, the United States and Mexico have reached an agreement to expand the deportations of undocumented migrants stranded in Mexican cities on the border.

The Mexican Foreign Minister, Alicia Bárcena, confirmed this Friday that her Government is evaluating launching deportation flights to Ecuador, Venezuela and Colombia, which would be added to those that already exist to Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
