As the alleged perpetrator of the events, the police detained a resident of Rotterdam, 32 years old and a student at that center whoAt the time of his arrest, he was wearing a firearm in pocket and bulletproof vest.
The detainee had a criminal record
The man had a record and a conviction for animal cruelty and authorities believe he acted alone, as explained by the Dutch police and judicial authorities in a press conference reported by local media. At around 2:25 p.m. (12:25 GMT), the police received information about a shooting in one of the classrooms at the Erasmus University Medical Center, south of the city, and in a house located approximately 1.5 kilometers of distance.
Two fires broke out after the shootings, which is believed to have been caused by the shooter: one in the house, where two people were initially injured; and another at the medical center, where the second shooting took place in which the professor was hit.
The woman attacked in the house, who was in the same neighborhood where the perpetrator of the attack resides, finally died, as did the professor who was later shot at the medical center. Police teams searched the hospital, which was evacuated, and urged citizens avoid going to the medical center, where the fire is already under control and psychological assistance is being offered to those present.
Police are conducting a “meticulous” investigation and questioning the suspect, who is cooperating with the investigation and will appear this Friday for the first time before a magistrate, as explained by prosecutor Hugo Hillenaar. The acting Minister of Health, Ernst Kuipers, stated shortly after learning of the event that he was following the situation very closely and expressed his “empathy” with the victims. Before taking over as minister in 2021, Kuipers was chairman of the board of directors of the Rotterdam hospital.
