The government of Colombia manipulated a video to alter the applause the president received Gustavo Petro during his speech at the General Assembly of United Nationsin NY.
The recording released by the Presidency of Colombia incorporated the applause that the speech of the president of the United States, Joe Biden, received, moments before Petro spoke, to make it appear that they were directed at the Colombian president.
The manipulation of the video was initially reported by the Colombian media La Silla VacĂa.
Although Petro did receive applause, the final clip of the video shared on Thursday by the government’s YouTube channel does not correspond to what was broadcast in the UN video.
He added a different shot to the original broadcast and what was broadcast in the media, in which it seems that many attendees applauded the president at the end of his speech.
The recording raised doubts among social media users and the media, given that there were several empty places in the General Assembly during Petro’s speech.
At minute 1:52:39 of the official broadcast, the same applause that the Colombian government attributes to Petro is heard, but in reality they happened after Biden concluded his intervention.
Furthermore, you can see that three men in the seventh row stand up at the same time, and that a woman walks towards the podium between the seats, the same scene that appears in the video of the Presidency of Colombia.
Photographer captured the moment of Petro’s speech and shows that in the seventh row there were only people sitting in three of the 12 places. However, in the edited video released by the Colombian government, these seats are all occupied.
After Biden gave his speech, some of the attendees stood up and headed toward the doors of the chamber. Later, Petro took the stage, but the noise continued and the president of the Assembly, the ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago, Denis Francis, had to request order to attend to the Colombian’s speech.
The annual meeting of the UN General Assembly brought together presidents, prime ministers, monarchs and other high-level leaders of member countries to express their positions on the world.
