The movement of thousands of tons of cargo by Union Pacific has been halted as a growing migrant crisis took the border authorities of USA to temporarily close train traffic with Mexico through the Eagle Pass entrance in Texasthe railway company said.
Eagle Pass, on the border with Mexico’s Piedras Negras, is one of the busiest gateways between both nations and was closed when the media reported migrants from the Latin American country traveling in railroad cars to cross into the small Texas town. .
“(Our) other entry gates cannot handle the additional traffic and we are notifying customers of a seizure at Eagle Pass, effective immediately,” Union Pacific said late Wednesday.
The influx of immigrants has prompted Eagle Pass Mayor Rolando Salinas to issue an emergency declaration, citing a “serious wave of undocumented immigrants.”
The situation is expected to last until Tuesday of next week, according to the city’s official account on social media platform X.
Another railroad, Canadian Pacific Kansas City, which connects Mexico with the United States and Canada, was not immediately available for comment on any impact on freight shipments.
On Wednesday, some freight trains operated by Mexico’s Grupo México Ferromex resumed operations after being stopped following a series of serious injuries and deaths of migrants traveling on them.
