He International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB) announced this Monday that their annual meeting scheduled for October will be held in the Moroccan city of Marrakech, despite being one of the towns impacted by the September 8 earthquake that left 3,000 dead.

As detailed in the statement, after the earthquake, WB and IMF staff began coordinating with Moroccan authorities and a team of experts to evaluate Morocco’s capacity to host the annual meetings.
After this review, they concluded that Marrakech could host the annual meeting and that it was appropriate to adjust “the content to the circumstances.”
“As we look ahead to the meetings, it is of utmost importance that they are held in a manner that does not impede ongoing relief efforts and is respectful of the victims and the Moroccan people.””says the press release.
Furthermore, the decision to keep the assembly in Morocco represents a “chance” for the international community to support Morocco and its people, who have demonstrated “a remarkable resilience in the face of tragedy”ends the statement.
