The president of the European Comission (EC), Ursula von der Leyencalled this Wednesday to complete by the end of this year the negotiations on trade agreements between the European Union (EU) and Mercosur (Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil) and between the community club and Mexico.
“We should aim to complete agreements with Australia, Mexico and Mercosur by the end of this year. And shortly after with India and Indonesia. Smart trade creates good jobs and prosperity“, declared the German politician during the State of the Union speech she gave in the plenary session of the European Parliament.
Since the beginning of this year, Mercosur and the EU resumed negotiations to conclude the preliminary agreement that both blocs reached in 2019 after two decades of negotiations.
These negotiations have been complicated by the new environmental demands raised by Brussels, which have been described as unacceptable by the authorities of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
The Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, one of the leaders who has most publicly criticized the new European position, has defined these environmental demands as “green protectionism”.
For his part, the ambassador of the European Union delegation in Mexico, Gautier Mignot, assured on September 6 regarding the modernization of the trade agreement between Mexico and the EU that the negotiation continues. He insisted that it could be finalized by the end of 2023, although he asked to wait.
