The chief executive of the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, Albert Bourla, assured that the symptoms caused by the omicron variant of the coronavirus seem milder than those caused by other mutations, but warned that it is transmitted faster.
“I don’t think it’s good news to have something that spreads quickly“Bourla said in a forum organized by The Wall Street Journal, before underlining:”That it spreads fast means that it will be in billions of people and that another mutation may come. Nobody wants that”.
Bourla pointed out that his company is investigating whether its vaccine against COVID-19 offers less protection against this variant and assured that he hopes to have more information in the coming weeks, although he did not offer a specific date.
Likewise, the Pfizer executive was hopeful that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will approve this month the use of Paxlovid tablets, which aspire to become the first oral treatment for COVID-19 patients in the country.
On the other hand, he acknowledged that his company could have done more to help improve the low vaccination rates registered in poor countries, beyond the shipment of vaccines.
In this regard, he noted that several African nations asked Pfizer to delay the shipment of supplies due to lack of logistics to administer all doses.
According to him, Pfizer should have anticipated these obstacles and helped solve them.
