Peruvian Navy received six helicopters transferred by the Spanish Navy

The Peruvian Navy received six Sea King SH-3H helicopters and their spare parts transferred by the Spanish Navy, through a Disposal Agreement signed last May, reported this Sunday the Peruvian Ministry of Defense.

The Minister of Defense, Jorge Chávez, said that the transfer, carried out at a symbolic price, will allow increasing the operational capacity of the Sea King line aircraft owned by the Navy.

These second-use aircraft were transferred for a symbolic price of 100 euros each, of which two are in flying condition, and another four are out of flight, with 305 associated spare parts packages.

The objective of the transfer is to be able to carry out all its operations on the coast “not only for search and rescue, but also to be able to help in each of the situations in which our population needs to be assisted.”

He added that these helicopters will be very useful especially during the emergency due to the El Niño phenomenon with tasks such as transporting humanitarian aid, transferring personnel and evacuations.

In that sense, Chávez thanked Spain, through its ambassador in Peru, Alejandro Alvargonzález San Martín, who was present at the arrival ceremony at the port of Callao on the ship Pisco.

The Disposal Agreement, which made the transfer possible, was signed between the Ministry of Defense of Spain and the Peruvian Navy on May 19 in Madrid, within the framework of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministries of Defense of both countries signed in 2018.

The General Commander of the Navy, Admiral Luis Polar, explained that these aircraft will be transferred to the Callao Naval Air Base and will enter an evaluation phase; After that, with the spare parts transferred by Spain and the spare parts from the same line that the Peruvian Navy has, four units will be put into operation.

“The idea is to have six operational ones, four Peruvian and two that have just arrived, to complete the six, and we hope that they will be there in about three months,” declared Polar.

The authorities of Peru are preparing with prevention and response actions for the announcement of a global El Niño phenomenon, of moderate to strong intensity, in the coming months, with special focus on the northern and central coast of the country.
