French scientist admonished for promoting hydroxychloroquine against COVID-19

The College of Physicians admonished Didier Raoult for promoting hydroxychloroquine as a treatment against COVID-19 without relying “on confirmed data.”

The College of Physicians admonished the media scientist Didier Raoult for promoting hydroxychloroquine as a treatment against covid-19 without relying “on confirmed data,” according to the decision sent this Tuesday to the AFP.

“Professor Raoult, through various media and especially his channel on YouTube, gave information that was not based on confirmed data, without showing the necessary prudence,” said the disciplinary chamber of the College of Physicians of Bordeaux (southwest). who analyzed the case.

Since the end of 2020, this 69-year-old infection specialist, at the head of a university medical center in Marseille (southeast), has been the subject of two complaints from the College of Physicians of the department of Marseille and the National Council of this order (CNOM).

Both schools blamed this doctor, with whom the French president, Emmanuel Macron, spoke in April 2020 about the use of this antimalarial to combat the coronavirus, for having violated several articles of the code of ethics.

The disciplinary chamber also found him guilty of “disclosing a new and insufficiently proven treatment procedure in medical circles” and of addressing “inappropriate, impolite and even aggressive” to other doctors.

However, this instance acquitted him of “charlatanism” and estimated that the patients, to whom he prescribed hydroxychloroquine, did not run any unjustified risk, when receiving the “usually recommended doses”.

Hydroxychloroquine, an active ingredient used against malaria, has not been shown to be effective against covid, although it has been vehemently defended by the presidents of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, and the United States, Donald Trump. (I)
