Latin American feminists are an inspiration for Europeans, according to the Equality Forum

At the UN Generation Equality Forum, they discussed the actions of Latin American feminism.

“The Latin American feminists are better organized, more effective, and less divided. The movements of the EU see them as an inspiration ”, considered this Monday the secretary general of the UN Generation Equality Forum, the French Delphine O.

In a colloquium organized on the outskirts of Paris by Paula Forteza, French-Argentine deputy of the French Assembly, Delphine O., 35, praised movements of struggle such as that of the Argentine women in favor of the legalization of abortion, of which precisely their first anniversary is celebrated at the end of this month.

They are impressive popular mobilizations. The legalization of abortion in Argentina happens after three decades of feminist movement, after failure after failure, they have persisted ”, argued the French ambassador for women’s rights.

She also believed that European feminist movements “are more divided” because of issues such as intersex.

“However, Latin American feminists have known how to bring together the LGTBI movements within their struggle,” he said.

Delphine O. also found that there are feminist tendencies in the American continent that have assumed a certain use of violence, “something seen with surprise by the Europeans.”

She spoke of Mexico, where women’s movements have hardened their protests. Although, at the same time, the French diplomat condemned “the increasing repression” in that country against feminist movements.

He cited the Cancun demonstration on November 9, 2020, when local police officers dissolved it by shooting, hitting and sexual assault that caused commotion in Mexico.

Latin American feminists are at a crossroads, according to Delphine O. “They are seen as counterrevolutionaries in a country on the left or revolutionary in a country on the right,” he closed.

The French diplomat is one of the representatives of the UN Generation Equality Forum, held in Paris last June with France and Mexico as organizers and which has five years to promote in the world reforms in favor of equality thanks to the 40,000 million dollars committed for that purpose.

On the other hand, Deputy Forteza, representative of the French in Latin America and the Caribbean and organizer of the colloquium, regretted that Paris has not had a priority in the Latin American region.

“During the presidency of (Francois) Hollande there were ten state visits, during the current one (Emmanuel Macron), one”, reflected the dissident deputy of Macron’s party (LREM), who, however, was optimistic in the future of the relationship, since “links in various subjects exist and will continue, as in science and education.”

Forteza also denounced the increase in deforestation in the Amazon in Brazil (22% in one year) and asked the Government “to be more proactive to put more international pressure” on this matter. (I)
