Two moviegoers, 38-year-old Conor Woulfe and 44-year-old Peter Michael Rosza, decided to demand $5 million in compensation from Universal Pictures. They charged her with misrepresentation, “false advertising, unjust enrichment and violation of the principles of fair competition.” All because men rented the movie “Yesterday” for $3.99 via Amazon Prime Video. After the trailers, they expected to see their favorite actress in the production. The problem is that scenes from were cut.

“Yesterday,” directed by Danny Boyle, is about a young man who one day wakes up in a world without a band. In the romantic comedy, Ana de Armas was supposed to play the supporting role of a girl who fell in love with the main character. After the first shows for the public, it turned out that the viewers are not entirely satisfied with this turn of events. The creators decided to remove all scenes with Ana de Armas, thus getting rid of the romance thread. In 2019, screenwriter Richard Curtis said it was “a very traumatic decision”. The actress, who a few months later delighted in the movie “Knives Out”, however, remained in the trailer.

The men in the lawsuit said the only reason they decided to rent the film was what they believed was the presence of Ana de Armas. When it turned out that the actress in “Yesterday” was gone, they were disappointed. They emphasized that each of them lost $3.99 and less than two hours of their lives on a production they would never have seen had they known that Knives Out star’s scenes had been cut. $5 million was to compensate them for their losses.
According to the information, after more than a year of receipt, the court rejected the lawsuit, considering the whole case to be “self-inflicted damage”. In justification, the judge cited other examples of trailers that featured scenes not included in the final cut of the film. It didn’t help the men that in 2023 one of them admitted renting “Yesterday” again, this time via Google Play, and plans another lawsuit. He explained that he hoped that his favorite actress would appear in this version.
