London delays controls on imports of EU goods after Brexit

He british government will delay the full imposition of import controls on goods from the European Union behind the Brexitas announced this Tuesday, delaying the start date until January 2024.

The UK left the EU single market in January 2021 and has delayed full implementation of border controls several times due to concerns about disruptions in ports and the risk of exacerbating the cost of living crisis.

By contrast, Brussels immediately introduced checks and paperwork for goods moving from the UK to the EU, causing delays and higher costs, and making it more difficult for some companies to compete.

The government had said in April that it would require health certifications for some animal, plant, and food and feed products from Europe before October 31.

“After listening to the views of the industry, the Government has agreed a three-month postponement for the introduction of the remaining sanitary and phytosanitary controls, as well as full customs controls for non-compliant Northern Irish products,” he stated in a statement.

Other requirements, such as physical checks and safety declarations, will be phased in until 2024. The timing of some of them, such as checks on medium-risk plant and animal products, will also be delayed by three months to give companies time. to prepare, according to the Government.
