US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo will meet with Chinese officials on Monday during a visit to beijing aimed at appeasing trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
His visit, which runs through Wednesday, is the latest in a series of high-level trips by US officials to China in recent months.
Such visits could culminate in a meeting between the rulers of both countries. US President Joe Biden recently said that he hopes to meet his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, this year.
Raimondo arrived in Beijing on Sunday and was received by Li Feng, director of the Ministry of Commerce for America and Oceania.
raimondo “Looks forward to holding constructive discussions on the trade relationship between USA and Chinathe challenges of American companies and areas of possible cooperation”indicated last week the US Department of Commerce.
The secretary is also planning to visit the Chinese economic capital of Shanghai.
Relations between Washington and Beijing have fallen to their lowest level in decades, largely because of US trade restrictions.
Washington says the restrictions are crucial to safeguarding its national security, while Beijing calls them ways to stem China’s economic boom.
