editing therapy genetics cell phone could revolutionize the treatment against cancer that caused the death of at least 10 million people in 2021, a specialist said this Wednesday.
“Cancer is characterized by the abnormal multiplication of cells that affect the tissues closest to them, so gene editing would revolutionize already known treatments and would show great efficacy in the face of complications”said oncologist and researcher Alejandro Madrigal.
He also added that this disease is currently a public health problem that affects the population worldwide because 20 million new cases have been diagnosed in the past year alone.
In the case of Mexico, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) specified that in 2021 more than 90,000 deaths from malignant tumors caused by cervical and breast cancer were registered. He also highlighted that hematological diseases are among the first 10 places of the different types of cancer.
Surgeries, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or hormonal therapy are the most applied techniques in patients suffering from oncological tumors, however their aggressiveness is high for patients.
Given this, other types of options have been sought, such as gene editing such as CAR-T, CAR-NK “GENiCAR”, which is based on gene editing with induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).
“What it is about is extracting the patient’s cells, they are modified in a laboratory, an antibody is put on them, a detonator, they expand and they are reintroduced to the patient”Madrigal said.
The oncologist also explained that editing the cells means a revolution and a great social impact at all levels, since the malignant tumors that this therapy fights have one of the highest incidence and mortality rates.
“The application of this treatment would be useful for various conditions, such as multiple myeloma, breast cancer, kidney cancer, glioblastoma and even autoimmune or infectious diseases”he pointed.
