Attacks against the Colombian army leave one dead and two wounded

The events took place in the department of Antioquia.

Attacks perpetrated against the Colombian Army in the municipality of Anorí, in the department of Antioquia (northwest), left one dead and two wounded, military sources confirmed this Sunday.

The first attack was perpetrated against a military unit that was deployed in a sector known as La Tirana, in a rural area of Anorí. An explosive device was activated there, apparently by dissidents from the former FARC guerrilla, the Army detailed in a statement.

In that attack, a noncommissioned officer and a soldier were injured, and they were taken to a medical center where they are recovering from their injuries.

The other attack was committed by the same dissidents in the urban area of that municipality, where another explosive device was activated that wounded soldier José Joaquín Álvarez Díaz.

“The military man was treated immediately but unfortunately he died as a result of the seriousness of the injuries they caused him,” the information added.

Faced with these attacks, the Army deployed military units that are already in that municipality to find those responsible for the events.

“The command will file the corresponding complaints with the Attorney General’s Office for the use of illicit means and methods of warfare, which violates International Humanitarian Law (IHL),” the Army added in the statement.

Anorí borders the troubled region of Bajo Cauca, which is hit by the conflict generated by the control of drug trafficking routes.

In that region, the guerrillas of the National Liberation Army (ELN), dissidents from the extinct FARC guerrilla and the Gulf Clan, the main group that emerged from the demobilized United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC), face each other to dispute control of the territory. (I)
