The second largest fashion retailer in the world, H&Mdecided to gradually stop sourcing from Myanmar, as allegations of labor abuses in the country’s garment factories.
H&M has become the latest brand to cut ties with suppliers in the country after Inditex, which owns Zara, Primark, Marks & Spencer and others.
“After careful consideration, we have made the decision to phase out our operations in Myanmar”said H&M.
“We have been following the latest developments in Myanmar very closely and see increased challenges in conducting our operations in accordance with our standards and requirements,” added.
Myanmar government spokesman Zaw Min Tun was not immediately available to comment on H&M’s announced departure.
H&M said on Wednesday it was investigating 20 alleged cases of labor abuses at Myanmar garment factories that supply it, while a UK-based NGO said cases of alleged abuses, including wage theft and forced overtime, they have multiplied since a military coup in February 2021.
