A magnitude 6.1 tremor shook at noon this Thursday a good part of Colombiawithout so far the authorities have reported victims or damage.
According to the Colombian Geological Service, the earthquake, which had initially been calculated as a magnitude 5.9, was actually 6.1 and occurred at 12:04 local time (17:04 GMT), with a “superficial depth, less than 30 kilometers“.
The epicenter was located in the town of El Calvario, in the department of Meta, in the center of the country, a few kilometers from the Colombian capital. The tremor was felt intensely in Bogotá and in other cities of the countrywhere many buildings were evacuated due to the emergency.
“After the earthquake that was felt in Bogota we have no reports or activation through the 123 Emergency Line. We will be monitoring the city in case an incident occurs,” the Bogotá Fire Department said on its social networks.
For its part, the National Disaster Risk Management Unit (UNGRD) reported that “perform a sweep” in the places where the tremor was felt to see if there are victims or damage.
Thirteen minutes after the tremor, at 12:17 local time (17:17 GMT), when people began to return to their residences and offices, an aftershock of magnitude 5.6 shook the country again.
