Ranking: Harvard, best university in the world and Sao Paulo in Latin America

The American university of Harvard repeated this year as the best in the world according to the Shanghai “ranking” of 2023, a position it has maintained since the creation of this list in 2003, while that of Sao Paulo maintained its position as the best in Latin America .

The 2023 edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, shows the same world podium as in 2022 with the aforementioned Harvard, Stanford and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), all of them American.

Within the first ten, all belong to the North American country, with the exception of the British Cambridge -4th position- and Oxford, which is in the same seventh place it was last year.

The University of Sao Paulo is not only the most valued center in Latin America, but it is also the only one to appear in the range of positions 101 to 150 of the best universities in the world, just like last year.

You have to go down to 15th place to find the first European university, that of Paris-Saclay, while the best positioned Asian is Tsinghua from Peking, located in 22nd place.

The South African University of Cape Town, located in the 201-300 range, stands as the best in Africa.

Among the indicators it uses to classify 2,000 centers annually -although it only publishes the best thousand every August 15- is the number of students and staff who win Nobel prizes and Fields medals (Mathematics), the number of articles published in scientific journals and the impact of their research.

The best Spanish universities, according to the list, are the University of Barcelona and Granada, both located in the range of 201-300, which means a setback for the university center of Barcelona, which managed to appear among the best 200 in 2022.

Among the best Spanish universities there are also the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Madrid, the Complutense University, the Pompeu Fabra University and the University of Valencia, all of them located between positions 301 and 400.

In the same fork as the University of Barcelona and Granada, between positions 201-300, is the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the best positioned Mexican.

In Argentina, the University of Buenos Aires fell to the 301-400 range after having managed to position itself in 201-300 the previous year.

In the case of Chile, the University of Chile was between positions 401-500, while in Colombia the Universidad Nacional de Colombia was in the 901-1,000 range after having been in the 801-900 range in 2022.
