COVID-19: Most of those infected in South Africa who arrived in the Netherlands are vaccinated and do not show symptoms of the disease

Most of those vaccinated are serving their quarantine without showing symptoms, although there are some cases with mild symptoms.

More than 90% of the 61 passengers who tested positive last Friday when landing in Amsterdam on two flights from South Africa were vaccinated against covid-19The Dutch health authorities said Thursday, estimating that “more than half” of these travelers will come out of quarantine today.

Of the 61 passengers who tested positive for coronavirus, 44 are still isolated in a hotel near Schiphol airport from Amsterdam since last Friday, when they landed on two flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town with more than 600 people on board, the regional health service (GGD) explained in a statement on Thursday.

Of the total positive cases, 14 were infected with the new omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes covid-19.

On Monday they were subjected to a new PCR and yesterday “they were personally informed” of the result of the test and the follow-up of their cases. “Fortunately, more than half of the people who are now isolated will be able to leave the hotel this Thursday and continue their journey ”to their final destination, because many were only passing through Amsterdam.

Those who have tested negative may leave, but those who tested positive in that second PCR “must remain isolated for some time”, highlights the GGD, which points out that “the situation is different for each person and they have spoken with all” those affected .

The GGD stressed that the passengers “have cooperated well in a difficult isolation situation for all”, but did not mention the case of a Spanish passenger and a Portuguese woman who were arrested and accused of breaking the quarantine after leaving the hotel, a version that the The couple denied, claiming they received permission from a GGD employee to leave after testing negative for two antigen tests.

The Prosecutor’s Office did not finally file charges against the couple, nor did it demand to extend their isolation due to lack of legal basis, since they had tested negative in several subsequent tests.

Ómicron: the symptoms of the new variant of covid-19, according to the doctor who discovered it in South Africa

Is the new omicron variant really so dangerous?

On the other hand, a GGD spokesperson assured RTL Nieuws that more than 90% of those infected on those flights that arrived in South Africa indicated that they had already been vaccinated against covid-19, and most of them are serving their quarantine without showed symptoms of the disease, although there are some cases with mild symptoms.

The passengers of those two flights were subjected to tests on Friday after South African scientists sounded the alarm about the detection of the new omicron variant, which is characterized by having a high number of mutations that could lead to increased transmissibility and, to a certain degree, evasion of previous immune protection.

Numerous countries around the world have already confirmed cases of this variant. (I)
