As the Knesset, Israel’s Parliament, debates a cornerstone law of the controversial judicial reform promoted by the Government of Benjamin Nentayahu, thousands of people camping since Saturday night near the parliamentary headquarters as a sign of rejection, within the framework of a wave of massive protestsand mobilizations against this initiative, which seeks to reduce the independence of Justice.
Specifically, legislators are debating since this Sunday the law that removes the so-called “sensible clause” that allows the Supreme Court to review and revoke government decisions and appointments that it deems unreasonable. For opponents of the reform, it is an important democratic counterweight, but the members of the government coalition, the most right-wing the country has ever had, consider that it is too broad a jurisdiction that limits the Executive’s room for manoeuvre.
The law that eliminates this doctrine of reasonableness could become the first law of the reform to be approved on Monday night, although this Sunday the Israeli president, Isaac Herzog, has confirmed that he continues with the efforts to try to reach a consensus agreement on the controversial reform, which has caused a unprecedented spiral of demonstrations against.
Thousands of public health workers have stormed the Jerusalem International Convention Center in protest of the reform, while a “unity march” organized by both opponents and supporters of the reform has marched from the Wailing Wall to the Knesset. Saturday, more than 550,000 Israelis took to the streets from all over the country to demonstrate against the reform, while some 20,000 people arrived on foot from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, after four days of traveling.
In addition, more than 10,000 reservists – including intelligence experts, cyberwarfare experts and members of elite units – have expressed their intention to not reporting for duty in protest against the reform. “We have acted to maintain [al Ejército] out of the debate, but due to its intensity in Israeli society we get involved and the cohesion [de las fuerzas armadas] has been harmed,” said the Chief of Staff, Herzi Halevi, in a statement to the troops released this Sunday.
