“At this critical time, Poland intends to continue to block Ukrainian grain exports to the EU. This is an unfriendly and populist move that will seriously affect Ukraine’s global food security and economy“- Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal wrote on Twitter. He also referred to the grain agreement broken by Moscow. “Russia has disrupted the grain initiative, destroying the infrastructure of our Black Sea ports and once again provoking a global food crisis,” he pointed out in the same entry.
Grain from Ukraine. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki: We will not open the border
The Prime Minister said on Wednesday that in the coming weeks, safe solutions should be developed for the countries of our part of the European Union regarding imports. He noted that otherwise, Poland will not make its market available either for the blocked today or for other agricultural products from Ukraine. – We will not open this border – said Morawiecki at the meeting of the ministers of agriculture of Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary in Warsaw. The current lockdown is due to run until September 15.
– Price fluctuations in global markets are one thing. However, if they are further strengthened by imports from Ukraine, we do not agree to that. Either appropriate mechanisms and regulations will be developed after September 15, or the government will implement it unilaterally, stressed the head of the government. Minister of Agriculture Robert Telus reminded that the participants of the meeting adopted a declaration in which they call on the European Commission to extend the ban on imports of cereals at least until the end of 2023. They also call for the involvement of Brussels in the construction of efficient transport corridors, facilitating the export of cereals from Ukraine to the depths of the Union. – This coalition is in Ukraine’s interest, because we want to help Ukraine – assured Telus.
– Also this coalition is for European solidarity. The Union is facing a very important moment today. We will be with Ukrainian products, or in the future Moldovan ones, for longer. Our position is just to build such mechanisms that will affect the future – explained the head of the Ministry of Agriculture.
Import from Ukraine. What is the blockade about?
In the previous season, about 3.5 million tons of cereals from Ukraine arrived in Poland – mainly corn and wheat. The current import ban covers maize, wheat, canola and sunflower. It is allowed to freely bring in other products, including fruit, meat or honey.
