The president of the European ComissionUrsula von der Leyen, considered today that it is “important” That “stop” he “blocking” of the agreement that facilitated the export of Ukrainian cereal through the Black Seaafter what Russia refused to renew it.
“It is important that the Black Sea Initiative blockade on grain stops and that exports through the Black Sea can go ahead,” Von der Leyen declared at a press conference after the summit between the European Union (EU) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) that concluded today in Brussels.
Von der Leyen said to be “deeply concerned” by Russia’s decision to end the agreement to export cereal, promoted by the UN and Turkey.
The Kremlin, which on Monday announced that it was abandoning the pact to export cereals, warned today that continuing with exports poses “certain risks” of which the countries involved should be aware.
To renew the agreement, which expired today, Russia demanded the connection of its agricultural bank, Rosseljozbank, to the SWIFT international banking system, the lifting of sanctions on spare parts for agricultural machinery, the unblocking of logistics and transport insurance, the unfreezing of assets and the resumption of the ammonia pipeline of the Togliatti-Odessa gas pipeline, which exploded on June 5, 2023.
“The risk is that it brings food insecurity to so many vulnerable countries in the world. The European Union, with all means, will continue to work to ensure that food security is achieved for vulnerable people.” commented von der Leyen.
He added that the solidarity lanes of the European Union, with which the community club helps to export Ukrainian agri-food products, have made it possible to extract from Ukraine “more than 45 million tons of cerealoilseeds and other products”.
He pointed out that the agreement to export cereal promoted by Turkey and the UN has allowed the export of another 35 million tons of agri-food products.
“For sure we will continue to get agri-food products out of Ukraine to global markets through solidarity lanes”, Von der Leyen said, despite stressing the importance of lifting the blockade on the cereal agreement.
