Latin America has the potential to boost liquid biofuels, say experts

Latin America has the potential to drive the biofuels liquids for its vast agricultural production and that there is also a commitment in the region to move in that direction, informed this Wednesday the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and experts.

IICA indicated in a press release that there is a great commitment in the region to advance in this industry that helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and encourage sustainable agricultural practices.

“The Americas is the region of the world that has most developed the issue of biofuels, both in production and in use or consumption. The region’s average in terms of mandatory blends of ethanol with gasoline ranges from 18%, far higher than any other region in the world.”highlighted the regional bioethanol consultant of the United States Grain Council, Federico Salcedo.

Salcedo, together with three international experts, analyzed the situation on the IICA in Action podcast.

The executive director of the Argentine Maize Bioethanol Chamber, Patrick Adam, highlighted the advantages of this development.

“Biofuel is a word that involves many actors, many sectors and many raw materials. We are talking a lot about bioethanol because it is competitive, and it is perhaps the one that has the best chances of growing in the short and medium term”, manifested.

The authorities indicated that most Latin American countries produce oil, but are not self-sufficient. However, the vast majority of South American countries have the potential to produce biofuels as they are countries oriented towards agricultural production.

The legal director of the National Federation of Biofuels of Colombia, Carlos Mateus, explained that “It is the agricultural sector that has the possibility of continuing to advance and continue to grow and offer opportunities for new products and new raw materials and, above all, more productive and more efficient”
