The US cancels student debt of 804,000 people for US$ 39,000 million

The United States Government announced this Friday that it will pardon the student debt of 804,000 people for a value of US$ 39,000 million.

According to US media reports, the measure will apply to beneficiaries of repayment plans based on income, people who have been paying their debt for between 20 and 25 years and who will now see it canceled, according to CNN.

The Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardona, said in a statement that the measure is aimed at debtors who have long been affected by the “cracks of a broken system that has failed them”.

Thus, he pointed out that this debt cancellation will benefit many people who were affected by administrative errors or were “deceived” by their universities. It will also target those with permanent disabilities, such as many war veterans.

Since Joe Biden came to the White House, his government has forgiven $116.6 billion of student debt for 3.4 million Americans, according to data from the Department of Education cited by CNN.

The news comes weeks after the Supreme Court struck down the plan to forgive up to US$ 20,000 for student debt loans that Biden had approved and with which he sought to expand this relief.

When that decision was made, Biden already warned that he would look for new ways to approve the cancellation of student debt.

We will use all the tools at our disposal” to continue with these measures, the US president said then.
